New season trends in cheerleading clothing

Cheerleading is a discipline that everyday gains more support in Italy. The Italian Federation of Acrobatic Cheerleading and Dance has, in fact, registered in the last few years an ever increasing number of affiliates and growing participation on regional, national and European competitions.

It is precisely in these championships and in the ones celebrated specially in the United States, where it is possible to identify the most popular trends in cheerleading clothes, the ones that will rule the fields and training rooms of schools around the world.

From short dresses to dance leotards, cheerleader uniforms have significantly changed over the years: skirts have become shorter, partly because of the mainstream influence in fashion but also to allow the realization of ever more complex movements. Knee-length skirts worn by the first girls practicing this sport are hardly imaginable in today’s state of the discipline where acrobatic numbers have grown in popularity and appreciation. Same thing goes for the fabrics used in the production of this clothes, which have been replaced by modern-day fabrics like nylon and spandex, that allow greater freedom of movement and transpiration.

The vast majority of cheerleader uniforms are created with the school’s colors in mind, combined with the color white. This is because white attracts the light and makes each movement more visible to the judges. This is of vital importance since cheerleading has become not only the support of another sport’s team but a sport in itself that has been considered to be part of the Olympic games in the near future.

As such, it has improved both routines and clothing. Many designers of figure skating dresses for competition and gym leotards are now offering cheerleading competition uniforms made of the same materials and with the same functions as for other competitive sports.

Some of the trends that will be available in sportswear stores and that have been seen in the latest championships are elaborate tops with original backs. Complete in the front and open in the back, with straps, cropped or halter, long or short sleeved to suit every season, combinations are infinite and allow every team to choose the option that best suits their needs and requests.

Another element of the cheerleader uniform for girls is the skirt. Even if stretch skirts are gaining in popularity, pleated ones are still the preferred choice for the majority of teams. Not only are they more comfortable and allow more movement, they also look better when performing twirls and jumps.

Knee-length socks have practically disappeared, and high top sneakers are growing in popularity, not only because they look good but also because they tend to better protect the ankle when compared to traditional sneakers.

Accessories have also experimented a transformation: pom poms and spirit sticks are often replaced by umbrellas and dance accessories like gymnastics ribbons, specially on a competitive level. Traditional uniforms are also enriched with water proof jackets, winter hats and original warm up clothes.
